För närvarande läser jag boken Devil Take the Hindmost, a history of financial speculation. Visserligen har jag knappt kommit igenom en fjärdedel ännu, men kan redan säga att den är ett måste för den som är intresserad av finanshistoria, och då framförallt av diverse finansiella bubblor som tulpanlökar i Holland, the South Sea Bubble i England, kraschen 1929, järnvägsmanian 1845 osv.
Det är fascinerande att se hur närapå exakt samma mönster återupprepas gång efter gång, hur det i optimistiska tider vimlar av förhoppningsbolag med fantastiska framtidsutsikter vars aktier luras på allmänheten, hur inget pris är för högt att betala för en aktie. Medans det i pessimistiska tider inget pris är tillräckligt lågt. Mr Market är som vi vet manodepressiv, och har uppenbarligen så alltid varit och kommer förmodligen alltid så förbli.
Jag kan även konstatera att en motsvarighet till Buffets tips, “be fearful when others are greedy, be greedy when others are fearful”, uttalades av Sir Richard Steel redan i slutet av 1600-talet :
Nothing could be more useful, than to be well instructed in his Hope and Fears; to be diffident when others exalt, and with a secret Joy buy when others think it is their interest to sell.
